The day the day turned black

It was going to be a happy, easy, non-exciting but good day. Tyler Caroline Trivers’ eighth birthday was November 8. On that same day I was scheduled for my annual physical so the doctor could confirm that I was not going to live forever and tell me what to stop doing and what I needed to start doing. And all I would think is, “I’ll drink to that.”
Tyler had her birthday party, but we weren’t there. And the physical was set for 9 a.m. but we weren’t there either. We lived in Paradise, Calif. and on Nov. 8, 2018, we ran (drove our Subaru) for our lives, with some pictures of our children’s families, some papers and, of course, a change of underwear.
