FAQ - General

Formaldehyde - Now What?

 Formaldehyde; what is it?

Formaldehyde is an important chemical used widely by industry to manufacture building materials and numerous household products. It is also a by-product of combustion and certain other natural processes. Thus, it may be present in varying concentrations both indoors and outdoors.

 Sources of Formaldehyde

Sources of formaldehyde in the home include some building materials, smoking, household products, and the use of some un-vented, fuel-burning appliances, like gas stoves or kerosene space heaters.  Formaldehyde is used to add permanent-press qualities to clothing, draperies and other textiles, as a component of glues and adhesives, and as a preservative in some paints and coating products.

In homes, the most common sources of formaldehyde are likely to be pressed wood products made using adhesives that contain urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins: particleboard (used as subflooring and shelving and in cabinetry and furniture); plywood paneling (used for decorative wall covering, cabinets, furniture); and fiberboard (used for drawer fronts, cabinets, and furniture).

The rate at which products like pressed wood or textiles release formaldehyde can change. Formaldehyde emissions will generally decrease as products age. When the products are new, high indoor temperatures or humidity can cause increased release of formaldehyde from these products.

 Health Effects

Formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas, can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing in some humans exposed at elevated levels. High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma. There is evidence that some people can develop sensitivity to formaldehyde. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions.

 Levels in Homes

Average concentrations in older homes are generally well below 0.1 ppm (parts per million). In homes with significant amounts of new pressed wood products, levels can be greater than 0.3 ppm.

Reducing Exposure to Formaldehyde in Homes

If you experience adverse reactions to formaldehyde, you may want to ask about the formaldehyde content of products before you purchase them, or avoid the use of them. For further information on formaldehyde and consumer products, call the EPA Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) assistance line (202-554-1404).

 Steps to Reduce Exposure

Use "exterior-grade" pressed wood products (lower-emitting because they contain phenol resins, not urea resins).Use air conditioning and dehumidifiers to maintain moderate temperature and reduce humidity levels.Increase ventilation, particularly after bringing new sources of formaldehyde into the home.

Steps to Reduce Exposure from New Flooring or Furniture

Check manufacturer’s packaging to ensure that the contents are certified to meet California’s current CARB Phase 2 levels.By far, the best way to reduce even normal levels of formaldehyde is to use ventilation.Cut and process all pieces OUTSIDE of dwelling areas.Expect some odors to last a week or more, but to reduce over time. Remember: the more ventilation, the faster the dissipation of even normal odors from formaldehyde or other materials.

Maintain moderate temperature and humidity levels and provide adequate ventilation. The rate at which formaldehyde is released is accelerated by heat and may also depend somewhat on the humidity level. Therefore, the use of dehumidifiers and air conditioning to control humidity and to maintain a moderate temperature can help reduce formaldehyde emissions. (Drain and clean dehumidifier collection trays frequently so that they do not become a breeding ground for microorganisms.) Increasing the rate of ventilation in your home will also help in reducing formaldehyde levels.

  1. How do I apply ColorSeal on edges? - ColorSeal perimeter sealant can be applied with the integrated nozzle. Clean the surface of the application area, cut the tip to the desired bead thickness, then apply a continuous bead of caulk. Press the caulk firmly down on the surface to ensure a good bond, smoothing and removing excess as you go with your finger, damp cloth or caulk removal tool.
  2. Will it cover silicone caulk? - It will cover silicone caulk but is manufactured to be used as a sealant itself.
  3. Is this firmer than regular bathroom caulk? - ColorSeal will cure about the mid-range hardness for sealant, firm, but flexible.
  4. Can this be used on granite counter tops? - Yes, ColorSeal can be used on granite.
  1. Can I use this to glue wood onto concrete floor base? - Eurobond D3 Glue is meant to be used on the tongue and grove of a floating floor and is not intended to be used as an adhesive to glue down wood flooring to a subfloor. Gluing wood flooring onto a wood or concrete subfloor requires a full-spread (trowelable) adhesive, generally urethane or similar. Check with your wood floor manufacturer for recommendations.
  2. Is it water soluble? Can you clean excess off with a damp rag? - Prior to drying time, you can use a damp rag to clean off excess Eurobond D3 Glue. In the initial couple hours, it can still be able to be cleaned off with a damp cloth with mild soap and water. Once it begins to cure (progressively from 2 hours to 2 days), we recommend using FilmFree Glue & Grime Remover Spray to remove any excess or spilled D3 Glue.
  3. Which instructions do I follow, the manufacturer's or the glue's? Does the glue expand after drying? - It is best to follow the manufacturer's recommended installation methods and to confirm that the product can be used during installation. Eurobond D3 Glue does not expand after drying.
  4. Will this work to fix gaps? - If your flooring is gapping, there may be other variables that could be causing the gapping and Eurobond D3 Glue wouldn't be gauranteed to fix the problem. We suggest to first contact your flooring manufacturer to troubleshoot what may be causing the gapping. For further information or questions, feel free to contact us at 1-888-277-FLOR.
  5. Would this work for floating cork floors? - Yes, Eurobond D3 Glue works great for floating cork floor installations, but as with any flooring, follow the manufacturer's recommended installation methods.
  6. Can I use this after floor has been installed? Can I use this glue in areas that are opening between planks? - No, CalFlor Eurobond D3 Glue was manufactured to be used during installation and applied within the tongue and groove or locking mechanism of the flooring.
  7. Does this glue have a clear look once it dries or is it white like Elmer's glue? - Once Eurobond D3 Glue dries it has more of an off white to clear color. Most all flooring T&G glues are this whitish color so they can be easily seen to be wiped off during installation. Then they dry clear and are invisible in a properly laid floor.
  8. Can I use this for Vinyl Plank T&G seams near sink and refrigerator areas to seal the seams? - Unfortunately, T&G glues are usually never used on LVT, LVP or LVF (luxury vinyl floors) and we don't recommend using Eurobond D3 Glue for your vinyl flooring.
  9. Can this be used for T molding on laminate floor? - The Eurobond D3 Type II Adhesive is for Click and Tongue and Groove Floors and is meant to be used in between the planks. This is not an adhesive that you would use to glue down your T molding and secure to the subfloor. For that use we would recommend a urethane-grade construction adhesive. But as with any flooring, please follow the manufacturer’s recommended installation methods and products.
  10. What are the ingredients? - For further information on the contents of the Eurobond D3 Glue, you can view the SDS on the product page. Here is the link to the SDS: Click Here
  11. Does this glue have PVA in it? -Yes, Eurobond D3 Type II Glue does have PVA in it.
  12. Can it be used for bamboo floors? - Yes, Eurobond D3 Glue works great for bamboo floating floor installations, but as with any flooring, follow the manufacturer's recommended installation methods.
  13. Is this product good for Pergo laminate planking? - The Eurobond D3 Glue is a great installation product for laminate flooring, however you will need to confirm with your flooring manufacturer’s instructions to confirm that gluing the tongue and grove of the planks is an acceptable installation method for your flooring installation.

  2. How big of an area can this kit repair? - How much this kit can repair is dependent on the length, width, and depth of the damage. 4. Will this repair scratches that are not deep, but showing up on surface of linoleum flooring? -The Mix2Match FloorFix can repair deep scratches and gouges where putty can be applied and stick. The surface scratches can be masked with CalFlor's Vinyl ScratchAway.

  6. How can I repair scratches on my hardwood floors? - Please visiteasyfloorrepairs.com for videos, tips, tricks and more to guide you through your repair.
  7. What do you use the lacquer for? - The lacquer seals the repair making the repair durable and less susceptible to traffic, maintenance, and moisture, while giving it a nice finish. Layers of lacquer can help better match different sheen levels in a floor.
  8. What can you use as a solvent to remove excess paste from tile? - Warm water will clean up excess putty, if the putty has hardened and water cleanup is not preferred, you can scrape the excess away.
